    Development Team Program

Development Team introduces skiers and their families to ski racing and teaches the fundamentals for successful life-long skiing. During training one night each week, and every other Saturday morning (check the calendar for specific dates), a combination of drills, fun and courses help young skiers refine their skiing skills, learn the fun of skiing, learn to run race courses, and support their teammates. As these younger athletes grow in their skiing and age, they can aspire to join the Age Class Program and race for their high school and/or in USSA.

Helmets are required for all skiers, at training and during races. Refer to the "Registration" link above for specific program description and costs.

    Northland Junior Race Series
Though the emphasis of our Development Team Program is learning the fun of skiing and teaching fundamentals of solid skiing during training sessions, D-Team members and others may also enjoy testing their developing skiils at local ski races. The Northland Junior Race Series (NJRS or Club races ) brings together 5-18 year old club racers on Sunday afternoons from January through March, ending with the NJRS Championship race. ANY member of the Duluth/Superior Alpine Club may particiapte, including D/SAC Holiday Camp athletes. These races are held at a variety of locations in conjunction with other ski clubs from Mont du Lac, Ashwabay (Ashland, WI), Ski Gull (Bemidji, MN), Lutsen, Giants Ridge and Chester Bowl.

Racers ski two runs on a GS (giant slalom) course, and compete within their age group. An awards ceremony at the end of each race recognizes all competitors.

All races are run by parent volunteers. “On-the job training” is available for all positions. Volunteering to work at races is a good way to understand the Development Team program and learn how USSA races are run 9for when your athlete moves up).
